Groote Post is an historic 18th Century farm near Darling, an hour’s drive up the West Coast from Cape Town. Peter and Nick Pentz, 3rd and 4th generation dairy farmers, started planting vines in 1993 and turned out their Maiden vintage in 1999.
Groote Post, once home to the Dutch East India Company, producing meat and vegetables for their fleet rounding the Cape, comprises 4000 hectares, of which 112 hectares are planted to noble cultivars, with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir leading the way. The rest of the property is stocked with antelope, beef cattle and sheep.
The Old Man’s Red & White Blend are named after Peter Pentz and pays tribute to him for his shift from dairy to wine.
Hilda’s Kitchen Restaurant at Groote Post is open for lunches from Wednesday till Sunday. The cellar is open seven days a week for wine tasting and sales.
